TraXX is an organization dedicated to the enjoyment, promotion, and celebration of 18XX board gaming. Founded in December 2018, TraXX was created to bring together players, designers, and enthusiasts who share a passion for railroad-themed economic games. Through conventions, game design and publishing, and other community projects, TraXX seeks to celebrate the rich history and traditions of 18XX while encouraging new ideas and experiences within the hobby.
TraXX 1, held April 25–28, 2019, was an amazing beginning to what has become an annual tradition. The pandemic may have temporarily slowed us down, but TraXX soon got back “on track.” Since that first gathering, we’ve hosted TraXX “Rerailer” in November 2021, TraXX 2 in May 2022, TraXX 3 in May 2023, TraXX “Caboose” in November 2023, TraXX 4 in May 2024, TraXX 5 in May 2025, TraXX 6 in May 2026, and TraXX 7 in May 2026. Each event has continued our goal of bringing together friends and fellow enthusiasts to celebrate 18XX gaming and the community surrounding it.
TraXX has also published five issues of MAINLINE Magazine. Its final issue, published in April 2026, brought the series to a fitting conclusion. Throughout its run, MAINLINE offered a unique blend of railroad history, 18XX and railroad-themed board gaming content, along with contributions from members of the broader train-gaming community.
In 2020, TraXX expanded into print-and-play games, giving enthusiasts around the world the opportunity to build and enjoy 18XX games. The success of 18 Los Angeles, which has recorded many hundreds of plays on 18xx.games, helped introduce TraXX designs to an international audience. Beyond the United States, 18 Los Angeles has found its way to players in Poland, Sweden, Greece, France, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Austria, South Korea, Turkey, Spain, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Australia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Romania, Finland, and Belgium — a wonderful reminder of just how global the 18XX community has become.
TraXX also entered the world of professionally published games through a partnership with GMT Games. That collaboration produced 18 India, an 18XX-style game created as a tribute to Francis Tresham and his extraordinary influence on the genre. 18 India reimagines and expands upon the innovative concepts introduced in Tresham’s 1829 Mainline, carrying some of his most intriguing ideas forward for a new generation of players.
From a single gathering in the spring of 2019 to annual conventions, magazines, print-and-play titles, and published games enjoyed around the world, TraXX has grown far beyond what we originally imagined. Through it all, the purpose has remained remarkably simple: create interesting game experiences, celebrate railroad history, and bring together people who share our enthusiasm for 18XX gaming.
